A journalist with past assignments ranging from heading a bureau for The Times of India to contributing editor of a Singapore-based news magazine, I care deeply about journalism, its practice and its education. And I care about these mass-mediated times we live in. This blog is my contribution of alternative thoughts and ideas on the tides of news and nonsense that assault our senses from the moment we wake. Before blogging, I do wonder -- do we really need another voice in the cacophony? Maybe not. But, I feel compelled to comment. Don't you?
Why "Mockingbird"?
A tribute to my first editor who wrote a satirical column under the name "Busybee"? A word from one of my favorite novels? Or an indicator of my sardonic attitude? The answer to why I chose this name is in all of the above.
It's also in this, what I know about the mockingbird -- the song of the mockingbird is a medley of the calls of many other birds. A mockingbird imitates these calls and then starts another one all it's own. A single bird may have 25-30 songs in its repertoire. Much inspiration to an intrepid blogger. The mockingbird also fiercely protects its nest and environment, often swooping down on what it perceives as a threat. Just right for a blog on media criticism.
